Laboratory

Our Analytical Services Division laboratory conducts mineralogical and chemical analyses on bauxite, alumina, Bayer liquor and water samples. Some analyses we do include:

Bauxite: Total Available Alumina (TAA), Available Alumina (AA), Reactive silica, Moisture, Loss on Ignition, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) (with XDB), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), and elemental analyses via Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP)

Alumina: X-ray Fluorescence (XRF)

Bayer Liquor: Alumina, Caustic and Total soda and elemental analyses via Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP)

Bauxite residue (red mud): X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and elemental analyses via Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP)

Water: pH, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), electrical conductivity, Salinity, Sodium, and elemental analyses via Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP)

Statutory Analyses

We analyze a sample from each shipment of bauxite exported for quality assurance.

Commercial

The JBI’s laboratory assesses bauxite for processability. This informs how a bauxite
feedstock will behave during the different stages of the Bayer process under varying
conditions. We can assess:

       Pre-desilication
       Digestion
       Settling and
       Mud-washing
