Renewed push to repurpose mined out bauxite lands for agriculture

Agriculture Minister Floyd Green says there will be a renewed push to have mined out bauxite lands used for agricultural purposes.
Minister Green says there already exists a formula to ensure the success of using the lands for cultivation.
“We’ve already developed a model for it and we have it in a cluster in Kirkvine where what we have done is utilise former bauxite land. We have pooled the resources of the community, we have built out greenhouses – in fact 20 greenhouses. Each individual in the cluster has a greenhouse of their own.”
“What we’ve been able to do is to use what used to be bauxite pits and turn them into rainwater harvesting ponds and use solar energy to use that water to run the greenhouses,” he explained.
Mr. Green said the ministry will expand this model across the country.
He was addressing the recent launch of the 2023 Denbigh Agricultural and Industrial Show.
