Despite the return of third-party sales of crude bauxite to the Asian market, total bauxite production remained below levels recorded last year. In June, total bauxite production fell by 4% to 846kt, marking a third consecutive month of decline for the year. On a positive note, the year-to-date results show production lagging just less than one per cent behind output levels for the same period last year.
Crude bauxite output for the month was 290kt, down 7% when compared with the corresponding month of 2018. For the first half of the year, output totaled approximately 1.55 million tonnes, which was equivalent to a 14% reduction relative to the first half of 2018.
Alumina production, on the other hand, recorded a year-on-year increase of 5% to reach 203kt, with increased output at Alpart and Jamalco (despite having a limitation on power and steam generation) contributing to this positive outturn. Alumina production from January to June amounted to 1.28 million tonnes, an increase of 10% relative to the first half of 2018.
During the month, the alumina refineries operated at an average capacity utilization of 68%, up from the 61% recorded over the same period last year. Read more
