The JBI's analytical laboratories undertake a wide range of analytical testing - both chemical and mineralogical; and processability testing. Routine analysis is undertaken on behalf of the government to verify the quality of bauxite being processed by the bauxite companies.

Laboratory WorkThe lab does analytical and research tasks on a variety of inorganic based sample types for industry and agriculture.  Primarily these tasks include bauxite and alumina, rocks, limestone, gypsum, shales, cement, sands and occasionally water, specifically from a   source.  The JBI lab also conducts analytical assays for a wide range of elements, whether major or trace.  This is done using classical wet chemistry methods and modern instrumental techniques.

1.    Process Samples

Each company converting bauxite into alumina submits monthly samples of the bauxite fed to the plant as well as red-mud effluent for JBI determination of the percentage alumina extracted.  This enables an estimate of the bauxite tonnage required to produce one ton of alumina (bauxite/alumina conversion factor)

2.   Shipment Samples

Noranda submits a sample from each shipment of bauxite for the analysis of moisture and limestone content.

1. Analytical Assays

 

The JBI labs analyses a range of sample-types for chemical and mineralogical composition for a fee eg. bauxite, red-mud, gypsum, limestone and related samples (by XRS, XRD, XDB).

 

Clients: local and overseas bauxite/alumina plants, bauxite exploration projects, gypsum exporters.

 

2. Processability Tests

The JBI test the bauxite-plant feed material prior to plant processing to ascertain behaviour in the following Bayer-Plant stages

1.     predesilication

2.     digestion

3.     settling

4.     mud-washing
